Can Ros:
Project report

How can one call and reflect upon cultural and geographic values in architecture without falling into parody?

In such outstanding forces like the ones in Ibiza we find ourselves facing the challenge to taste its inherent virtues to then, without falling on cliches or literalness, capture it on paper.
Ibiza is much more than a place. Can Ros is the opportunity to reflect all of those natural and organic nuances, setting prejudices and prior ideations aside. True experience. A negation to the parody.

SEMPITERNUS «semper» forever and «ternus» duration.

PROJECTION OF THE PAST

The traditional architecture of Ibiza has not changed in recent years. This is because Ibiza has always been an economically self-sufficient culture and has used its own local resources and knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, to find the function of the elements and integration into the landscape.

Architecturally, traditional Ibizan houses are characterized by thick isolated stone walls, plastered on the outside, rectangular rooms and horizontal ceilings supported by exposed wooden beams. It is a simple and sober Mediterranean architecture, which begins with the addition of cubic modules that flow freely around the space, resulting in a functional house that always has the potential for expansion over time.

For Can Ros these traditional features of Ibizan architecture are introduced and mixed with a project focused on himself; it was designed as a game of juxtaposed volumes within the plot, summing up in two large rectangular pieces dividing the main house area with respect to an area of guests who are turned to each other according to orthogonal axes, a south orientation taking advantage of the great light of the location that bathes each of the interior spaces in a fully functional way.

Sempiternus

Base of the traditional in order to be able to innovate.

For Can Ros these traditional features of Ibizan architecture are introduced and mixed with a project focused on itself; it was designed as a set of juxtaposed volumes within the plot, summarized in two large rectangular pieces dividing the main house area with respect to a guest area.

To open the house, the great importance of the courtyards as connecting and flow elements is highlighted, adapting organically to the idea of the project, since the perimeter interrupts the view of the horizon of what surrounds it, thus generating a small «oasis» which is the central courtyard, making the house invisible from the outside and turning on itself, emphasizing even more the importance of these three interior courtyards that are generated.

Time as functionality.

The house proposes a quiet and stereotomic design that finds in the main staircase its main ally in the spatial organization of the house. This process of growth starting in a central core to which spaces are annexed according to the needs and organizational capacity required for the inhabitants of the house to the outdoor spaces that appear between them makes time an element of reflection in the project.

Sempiternus ‘Semper’ always and ‘Ternus’ duration.

It allows to qualify that which had a beginning but will not have an end.

This temporality bathes each area of the house in a different way, playing with the materials and their spatiality; That is why in the rooms, being the most private space, they are accompanied by patios of smaller dimensions than the main patio, as opposed to the central area that is conceived as a large meeting space, more lively, contact, which gives life / time to Can Ros.

A house can be understood as an intermediary between the exterior and interior. A shell enclosing a living space with the ability to regulate how its inhabitants interact with the outside world.

The house proposes a timeless, calm and
stereotomic design, which has, in the main
staircase, one of its main allies in the spatial
organization of housing.

When designed with a site–specific approach, architecture purposely opens and closes to its environment to allow the desired living experience.

From the outside, the house conceals and protects the diverse activities within, creating a sense of intrigue and inviting discovery. At the same time, it speaks to the beauty of simplicity that resonates throughout the entire design

A wide ceiling-to-floor window in the south-facing facade frames views of the local landscape from the double-height living area and the upper floor.

The house proposes a timeless, calm and stereotomic design, which can be felt from both its interiors and exteriors.

“New needs required new materials. This meant a new approach to life and a new way of life.”
